It is estimated that over 15,000 people came out today to rally against the cuts to their pensions. There were teachers, firemen, NHS workers, physiotherapists, and all sorts of people from all areas of the public sector. The museums were closed. The ferries did not run. The tunnels, both the Wallasey and Birkenhead, were closed all day. That is something I’ve never known to happen. It was a very big day. The biggest national strike of our generation. I heard one speaker call this the year of protests and it can certainly be remembered for that.

One thing I noticed about this rally compared to other events this year was how calm it was. Sure there was a huge police presence but it was very calm. People made their point and then went to the pub for a pint. No egg throwing or general annoying of the police just cos. It’s good to see people stand up for the beliefs in a calm fashion. More civilised than your average day in Parliament I bet.
