The Heron Tree. After the ‘Sea Worlds Carousel’ the people at Les Machines de L’ile plan on building this. In fact they’re working on it right now. There is a prototype at their workshop which I will show you tomorrow. If you thought the spider or elephant was crazy this is just plain insanity. It will be 30 metres high and 45 metres in diameter. The idea is that plants will grow over the framework to cover it. The result will be a stunning living tree that you can walk around. There is a model person in there, if you can spot them, that shows the scale of it. You’ll be able to walk all the way to the top for an amazing view of Nantes.
Even more ambitious is the plan to have two large herons on the top. Apparently they’ll take it in turns to land on the tree and pickup 40 passengers before flying them around the tree top. These guys are completely brilliant in a mad scientist kind of way. They come up with crazy ideas and make them happen. There’s no doubt in their mind that they’ll do it. The tree is set to open in 2016.
