Justice for the 96

Justice for the 96

20 years ago today the Hillsborough tragedy claimed the lives of 96 people. I was only 10 at the time and while Liverpool FC was my favourite team I wasn’t that into football as a kid. I had the sticker book. I remember going “Got, got, got, swap!” with my mates. I knew the players names and watched the big games. But I was never *that* into football so my memories of 20 years ago are quite vague. I was probably at my Nan’s in Bootle on the day it happened. It wasn’t until just over 2 years ago that I really understood things. I knew that 96 people had died and of course it was tragic but I never realised how much of an impact it really had until I took this photograph. After seeing how it affected people I made the decision to document the day 2 years ago. I went back last year and found it incredibly hard to take any photos. Today is the 20th anniversary and over 10,000 people are expected to attend. I hope to be able to document the event so that people know just how important this day is to people in Liverpool. You really can’t help but be moved when you see the support at this event and when you look at the ages of the people. Kids crushed to death simply because they wanted to see their heroes win. Its going to be a hard day.
