I took my first trip to Venice back in September. It was an incredibly stunning place. On scenic walk back from the Rialto Bridge we passed through St Mark’s Square. It had flooded, which really took me by surprise. I know the water comes right up to the front doors on some buildings but finding huge areas of Venice flooded was a shock.

Apparently this sort of thing is semi-normal. It happened just the other day but unfortunately it wasn’t as picturesque as our trip. The photos on the Guardian make it look like the city sank.
