'Up to something' portraits
Portraits taken at the Fab Collective's exhibition 'Up to something'. We set up a white board in the shade and photographed the people who visited our exhibition. Over the month I took 111 portraits. It was a fantastic experience.
I asked people to do anything but smile. So that makes people look unhappy and I tell them not to look unhappy. The result is that 9/10 people will look blank, try not to smile or look sad. The others do something out the box like fight or allow you to capture a real look.
They were all shot on a D700 with the 50mm f/1.8. Assuming I remembered they were almost all shot at f/8. One or two were at f/1.8 by accident but work well enough. The idea was to simply remove everything that you as a photographer would normally worry about. Settings, light, etc. Same settings. Same light. All I had to do was get the look. It put the emphasis on me as a person more so than me as a photographer.
